Religious Education (RE)

Religious Education (RE) classes began at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist  in 1975. Today, staffed by dedicated volunteer parishioners, we help pass on knowledge of the faith and love for Christ to more than 300 children from Kindy 5 (5 years old) through Form 5 (17 years old).

We take special care and emphasis in preparing the children for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), the Sacrament of the Eucharist (First Holy Communion) and the Sacrament of Confirmation. We follow a standardised syllabus in line with the Archdiocesan Catechetical Commission, which is the Malaysian Catechetical Series (MCS).

At the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist RE classes, level 1 typically refers to those who are in Primary 1 of the secular school system (7 years of age), and level 10 typically refers to those who are in Form 4 of the secular school system (16 years of age). However, this may not necessary be true in all cases, especially when it comes to children who attend private or international schools, or children of foreigners working in Malaysia

The topics covered by each level in the MCS are to guide and lead a child towards life in communion with God. There are 25 topics in total for each level, sufficient to cover approximately 33-36 normal Sunday school weeks in a year.

RE also organises formation camps for these children. Children of the Confirmation class are also required to perform community service work. These acts of service will help them experience first-hand their vocation as followers of Christ.

RE also actively encourages parents to journey with their children in preparation for the Sacraments. In this respect, a Parents’ Group class is also available for parents of the RE children held at the same time as RE classes. Here, the topics cover a wide range of subjects that may be of interest to Catholic parents – from Liturgy, Mass, Bible, Pope’s encyclicals, Church History, Sacraments and Devotional prayers, etc. The group meets informally in one of the classrooms, and parents are invited to drop in anytime they can. The Parents Group also participates in the programmes that are organised for the RE children.

Besides the regular Catechism classes, we also incorporate a special programme called Blossoms & Buddies for children aged between 10 – 11 years old, and SPM Bible Knowledge classes for the children aged between 15-17 years old.

RE also supports and nurtures children who have not been baptised into the Catholic faith. These children are invited to journey with the rest of the children in their class.

Classes are held on Sunday at the St John’s Primary School as follows:

9:00 am – 10:30 am
