Obituary Notice:

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Rev Fr Joseph Gomez on 18th of June 2019 in Tung Shin Hospital, Jalan Pudu.

Fr Joseph, aged 68 suffered a heart attack during the Clergy Recollection and was rushed to the hospital. Attempts to resuscitate him failed and he passed away shortly thereafter.

His sudden demise comes as a shock to the clergy and laity of the Archdiocese as Fr Gomez was barely two weeks into his priesthood, having recently been ordained by most holy Reverend Julian Leow, Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur on 6th of June 2019 at Church of Divine Mercy, Shah Alam. Following his ordination, he was assigned as Assistant Parish Priest to Church of Divine Mercy and was enthusiastically looking forward to serving the parish.

Fr Joseph’s journey towards realising his dream of becoming a priest has been one of perseverance. After a short stint at College General Penang, he worked as a teacher in Kelantan before he read Sociology and Political Science at University Kebangsaan Malaysia. After graduation, he worked in an insurance company for a year before leaving for the United Kingdom to further his studies in law at University of Kent in Canterbury.

During his stay in the UK, he also journeyed with the Jesuits. He also qualified as a teacher and taught religious education in the UK.

Fr Joseph returned to Malaysia in 2013 to pursue his dream of serving God through the priesthood.

After a short sojourn in Malacca Johore Diocese, he submitted in 2017, an application to join the priesthood and requested to be incardinated into the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur. Upon acceptance by Archbishop Julian Leow, he did pastoral work at the Church of the Sacred Heard, Jalan Peel and Church of St John Vianney, Tampin. He was ordained a transitory deacon at Carmelite Monastery, Seremban on 1st of February 2019.

The late Fr Joseph leaves behind his sisters Theresa Anbanathan, Julie Martin & Helen Monsauret, brothers-in-law, 10 nephews and nieces, cousins and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss.
